Well folks, this news comes as all sorts of shocking and interesting and raises a lot of questions (and theories) about where Marc Webb’s new take on Spider-Man is heading.
The Hollywood Reporter came out today with the news that Paul Giamatti (Sideways) will be playing Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Rhino is one of Spidey’s most notorious nemesis and one of the members of The Sinister Six, a villain group consisting of Rhino, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, Electro, and Sandman. We already know that Jamie Foxx is set to play Electro, so the inclusion of The Rhino as a stepping stone towards The Sinister Six doesn’t seem as out there as before.
Rhino, just like everyone in the Spider-Man universe, was a regular man before a failed experiment turned him into a super-powered wrecking ball. Aleksei Mikhailovich Sytsevich was a simple thug working for the wrong people when a strong polymer attached to his skin, giving him super strength, super speed, and ridiculous durability. If anyone in the Spider-Man universe is an unstoppable force, it’s Rhino.
In the comics, Rhino started off as one of Spider-Man’s strongest foes, but his character was written poorly and he took a back seat for some time. More recently, the character has been re-introduced as a much more sympathetic character and has even been a part-time ally to Spidey.
Paul Giamatti seems to be one of the most out of left field decisions for the role, as Rhino is a hulk of a man and Giamatti is a tiny 5’8″ little man. One can only assume that we’ll see some crazy special effects for the role (hopefully a bit better than The Lizard) or see an entirely different take on the character. Either way, no one can play angry like Giamatti and I’m really excited to see him finally get into the superhero realm (I was hoping he’d play The Penguin, however).
While the details of the The Amazing Spider-Man sequel are still unclear at this point, we know that Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) will be playing Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker’s biggest love interest and will pose a threat to Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy. Marc Webb has stated that the series will build to Stacy’s eventual and very tragic death, but we don’t know if that will happen in the sequel or in part three.
Andrew Garfield is set to return as the titular hero and will be joined by Dane DeHaan (Chronicle), who will play Harry Osborn, and the newly announced Felicity Jones who will play a yet unknown character (my money’s on Black Cat). Sally Field and Michael Sheen will also return.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will hit theaters May 2, 2014. With the recent casting news, expect a lot more information to leak out soon.
