Box Office Talk: 2 Guns, The Smurfs 2 Predictions

As August begins the pickings become slim. Long gone are the highly anticipated movies like Iron Man 3Star Trek Into Darkness and Fast & Furious 6. From here on out we’ll be getting films like 2 GunsPlanes and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, along with a bunch of similar films. By no means do I mean to imply that these movies will be bad, but studios are more inclined to ‘hope’ these films do well at the box office as opposed to expecting it.

I see a lot of movies. Rarely do I ever toss aside an opportunity to see something in theaters. I can only think of 2 instances in recent years in which I found an excuse not to see a particular movie. The first was Twilight; all of them. I had no interest at any time to see a single film in the franchise, and that has not changed. The other film was The Smurfs. In 2011 when The Smurfs 2 was released my kids were 7, 5 and 1; the perfect ages to go with a movie going dad like myself to see The Smurfs. Instead I decided that my wife, who rarely had time to see many movies, should take the kids. Upon her return home, prior to me asking how the movie was I received the following statement: “You get to see all these good movies, and THAT’S what you send me out to see!” Needless to say when I informed her that she would be responsible for taking the kids to see The Smurfs she flat-out declined; I guess I’ll be playing the victim this time around. The Smurfs grossed $142+ million domestically, which is a nice number but not incredible considering its $110 million budget. However, worldwide The Smurfs made just under $564 million and that’s remarkable. It’s that reason that it comes as no surprise that The Smurfs 2 isn’t expecting a bonanza of dollars to be made domestically, but is definitely looking to cash in at the foreign markets. Although I don’t expect huge number, I expect a decent turnout for the 5-day with an okay weekend.

2014 will mark Denzel Washington’s 40th anniversary since his first (uncredited) film role as “alley mugger #1″ in Death Wish. The role and the film couldn’t be more appropriate because since that 1974 role, Denzel has not yet stopped kicking all kinds of ass. Nominated for 6 Oscars and winner of 2, the talented actor has become most known for his dramatic performances. 2 Guns is the first time Denzel has appeared in some form of comedy since 1996′s The Preacher’s Wife. The same can’t be said for Mark Wahlberg, Washington’s co-star in 2 GunsPain & GainTed and The Other Guys are just the comedy films that Wahlberg has appeared in since 2010. The pairing of the two actors should be memorable as both exude great charisma. Denzel has proven to be a box office draw for quite some time, while Wahlberg’s drawing power has increased his status as a headliner remains somewhat questionable. I can’t say that I’ve been all that impressed by the 2 Guns trailers, but Denzel and Wahlberg are big enough names to interest me and make the movie a possible box office presence. I think 2 Guns is all but guaranteed at least $30 million opening.

Here’s how I see the Top 10

Box Office Predictions

1 2 Guns $35,000,000
2 The Smurfs 2 $30,000,000 (3-day)
$41,000,000 (5-day)
3 The Wolverine $21,800,000
4 The Conjuring $12,200,000
5 Despicable Me 2 $10,700,000
6 Turbo $6,900,000
7 Grown Ups 2 $6,000,000
8 Red 2 $4,500,000
9 The Heat $4,400,000
10 Pacific Rim $4,000,000

Everyone is predicting The Smurfs 2 to have a pretty good 5 day. Todd is the least optimistic with a healthy $38.2M, followed by Daniel and his $39.3M number. They are the only players to see the film opening under $40M. Shane, on the other hand, sees a very good opening of $51M. There’s not a lot of difference, so not much ground will be made up on this film. 2 Guns, however, tells a different story. I ($35M) have the film opening highest, putting a lot faith into the film’s stars. Daniel ($33.8M) is the only other person to see the film opening over $30M. Shane ($21M) and Nick ($24M) both see an opening of under $25M. If that happens, there’s no way that 2 Guns isn’t a box office letdown.

Don’t forget to join in on the game over at Box Office Ace.
