The Trailer Park: ‘Annabelle’ (2014)

The term “instant classic” gets thrown around a little too much, especially without any time passing to let a piece of art sink in. However, sometimes you just know. When The Conjuring was released last year the buzz was ecstatic, cementing James Wan as one of the best horror directors of our generation. I walked out of an early screening saying it was an instant horror classic, and I still believe that. Not too long after the film’s reception and box-office numbers, it was announced that a spin-off would be on the way about the doll, Annabelle. Well, now we have our first look at the James Wan produced horror film, directed by John R. Leonetti, and it looks like everything you would want.

There hasn’t been an official plot synopsis released, and that’s fine by me because the trailer has peaked my curiosity. Annabelle is given as a gift, and after a psychotic woman bleeds on her she becomes possessed… just take a look at the creepy trailer below:

The atmosphere that the film looks to create seems paralleled to Wan’s film, but it’s definitely something of its own. John R. Leonetti is mostly credited for being a Director of Photography on Piranha 3D, Insidious, and The Conjuring (of course), but he also directed Mortal Kombat: Annihilation and The Butterfly Effect 2 if that has you interested (it shouldn’t). With all of the interest, skepticism is always in the back of my mind. I like to think this won’t be an unnecessary cash grab, but who knows? It will be a financial success without any doubt, I just find it a bit hard to believe it can top The Conjuring‘s perfection.

Annabelle is set to stare at audiences on October 3rd. What do you guys think of the trailer? Did it creep you out? Do you think The Conjuring was fantastic as well? Does this feel like a cash grab? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

  • I feel this would be an awesome short companion film, not it’s own 90 minute whatever it is.

  • What the film will do with the runtime will be interesting. There seems like no way the entire thing will be about a doll scaring people, especially since we know how it ends. The jingle at the end of the trailer still gave me chills though.

  • Trailer didn’t do much for me, but Annabelle was one of my favourite parts of The Conjuring. I do think this would work better as a short film though.
