Ben Aflleck is the new Batman. Warner Bros. made the official announcement Thursday night in a press release stating that Affleck will play Bruce Wayne/Batman in Zack Snyder’s follow-up to Man of Steel. The film will undoubtedly bring Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman together for the first time on film. They also announced the film’s release date, July 17, 2015. This is right in line with the July release dates of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. Man of Steel was released in mid-June of this year, but it grossed considerably less than Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films.
From the press release:
“Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.” ”
By saying that Affleck and Snyder will create an “entirely new incarnation of the character” they are definitely trying to escape the umbrella of Nolan’s version of Gotham’s finest. I also like how they say the “as-yet-untitled-project”, but it seems everyone on the Internet insists it’s Batman vs. Superman. By now, most of you have heard this news. I still wanted to add some thoughts to the subject. I honestly thought it was a joke when I saw the news on Facebook, but it’s absolutely true. I couldn’t be happier.
In 2003, Affleck did a serviceably job as Daredevil, in an otherwise pretty bad film. I think it will ultimately make him a better Batman. There are plenty of similarities between Marvel’s Daredevil and DC’s Batman. What I think makes Daredevil suffer is that Matt Murdock is a much weaker character than Bruce Wayne. You have Murdock as a blind lawyer compared to a genius billionaire named Bruce Wayne. There’s really no match. I also think Affleck is very sorry about that Daredevil film, and he’s only gotten better since then. If you look at his filmography he’s never done anything even remotely close to this in terms of a big blockbuster franchise. Why not go with the biggest one you could find?
What are your thoughts on Ben Affleck as Batman?
