As a lot of you know, Skyfall is my favorite movie of 2012 and one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. Great landscapes, incredible lighting and shadows, and visuals to make even the biggest of nerds happy, Skyfall proves that you can mix grit with beauty and have a worthwhile blockbuster. A large part of the vision of the film, of course, has to be accredited to director Sam Mendes, a man not many people thought would be the ideal fit for an action flick like Bond. Luckily, MGM’s gamble paid off and it’s hard imagining anyone else guiding the franchise at this point.
Even better news, according to the UK Daily Mail, Sam Mendes is very close to signing on to direct the next James Bond film, which is, for now, being called Bond 24. While Mendes is currently working on a stage production of King Lear and a musical version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we don’t know if the man has the schedule to commit to another Bond, seeing as MGM will most certainly want to make a next film much sooner than later, given Skyfall’s incredible box office success.
Still, the news is very exciting. Bond 24 is set to be a stand alone Bond film, with only references to Skyfall and the past. We know for certain that Daniel Craig will be returning as 007 and he’ll be joined by Ralph Fiennes and Naomie Harris. Expect a late 2014 or 2015 release.
What are your thoughts? Are you glad to hear that Mendes may be returning to the helm? Do you think a formula could fall in place where a particular director, after proving his/her worth, will be given a franchise like Nolan was Batman? And of course, for argument’s sake, besides Mendes, who do you think could successfully tackle Bond? My moneys on Danny Boyle.
