Box Office Talk: Oz Wins Again, Burt Wonderstone Not So Incredible

The box office made up a wee bit of ground this past St. Patrick’s Day weekend and now stands 12% behind 2012′s pace. The box office was dominated, for the second weekend in row, by Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful. After 10 days of release the film has already grossed over $144 million domestically and sits at over $280 million worldwide. Disney has itself another bon-a-fide blockbuster, leaving little doubt that there will be a sequel to the prequel forthcoming.

Also worth noting is that Silver Linings Playbook in its 18th week of release has now grossed over $125.5 million domestically. A film that began its run in only 16 theaters, and slowly built its way up to the over 2600 hundred theaters it’s playing in now has had an impressive run. Garnering nine Oscar nominations, including an Oscar win for Jennifer Lawrence in the Best Actress category, Silver Linings Playbook demonstrated once again the impressiveness of Harvey Weinstein and his marketing prowess.

Of the two new releases for the weekend, the one that was projected to do best was the Steve Carell and Jim Carrey comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. Comedies have over-performed so often as of late that it’s easy to understand why Warner Bros., who distributed the film, had expected the film to do so well. Unfortunately, the only thing ‘Incredible’ about Burt Wonderstone is that it continued to streak of disappointments for Warner Bros. The film earned a disappointing ‘C+’ Cinemascore, to go along with a 39% rotten rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes; although on the bright side 63% of audiences like the film, and its IMDB rating currently stands at 6.4. As everyone knows by now it makes me happy when a film looks ridiculously bad, performs ridiculously bad. Jim Carrey better make that Dumb and Dumber

It’s been almost 10 years since Halley Berry was the sole lead in a film that opened at over $15 million (Catwoman). In that case, however, the $15 million opening was considered a massive disappointment and the film a massive failure; and one that would go on to butt of many jokes over the years. Berry’s newest film The Call opened at a surprising $17+ million, already exceeding its budget of $13 million. The thriller was a surprising success with audiences earning a ‘B+’ Cinemascore, and while critics were scoring the film 39% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes 71% of audiences liked the movie, with IMDB showing a current rating of 6.5. Either fans were eager to see a thriller they deemed to look better than average, or Berry remains a draw after all.

The Box Office Prediction Game – Week #11 results

Week 11 shook things up pretty good. Daniel won the weekend and in the process jumped ahead of Trevor into 3rd place and finds himself on $6 million behind me for 2nd place. Trevor and myself both had higher expectations for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, although they weren’t quite as high Shane’s. Nick, who finished 3rd for the weekend, continues to reside in the top spot for what I believe is the eighth or ninth weekend of the year; rather impressive seeing as how he’s only actually won 1 week. Jason was able to make up a little bit of ground, finishing the weekend in 2nd place. As for Shane, well let’s just say he won’t be getting hired to do studio projections any time soon.
