Another year, another impressive slate of movies ahead of us. Unfortunately, this weekend’s releases leave a little to be desired. I expect holdovers to retain the top 3 spots, with the ‘award season hopefuls’ continuing to pull in somewhat impressive numbers as they continue to draw in audiences. Films like Django Unchained, Les Miserables and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will continue to reign supreme. Although I expect them to finish outside the Top 10, I’m expecting strong showings from Zero Dark Thirty and The Impossible, both films are based on true ‘occurrences’ and seem to have very powerful stories. I’m personally planning on seeing both tonight, since my local multiplex is showing both films.
Texas Chainsaw (3D) is one of the two films opening nationwide this weekend. In 2012 The Devil Inside opened to a ridiculous $33,732,515. I think there’s a better chance of Leatherface walking past my house, then there is of Texas Chainsaw (3D) coming anywhere close to that number. I think the movie opens somewhere closer to 2011′s Season of the Witch and it’s $10,612,375 opening. There’s just far too many better options available and entirely too many films worth seeing; this just doesn’t feel like one of them.
Matt Damon teams up with his Good Will Hunting director, Gus Van Sant, inPromised Land. It’s been some time since Damon has had a box office hit, and the wait should continue because the dramatic film doesn’t seem to have much appeal. I think if Promised Land opens up to anything over $8 million, it’s a success.
Here’s how I see the Top 10:
