The fifth weekend of 2013 was the lowest grossing Top 10 for a fifth weekend since 1999, when She’s All That, the Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachel Leigh Cook high-school romantic comedy. Just three weeks away from the Academy Awards, and there’s a chance that seven of the Best Picture nominees will have grossed over $100 million domestically. Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty are both sitting just over $75 million, and the two exceptions are Beasts of the Southern Wild, which never played in more than 318 theaters and Amour, which never played in more than 64 theaters. Since nominations were increased to more than 5, I have no double that we’ve never seen anything like it. It’s nice to see the Academy recognize films that the masses have seen, as opposed to the smaller films that seem to have dominated the awards in most years past.
As for the weekend’s new releases:
In somewhat of a surprise,Warm Bodies dominated the box office and is the first breakout hit of the year. Earning a ‘B+’ Cinemascore, and currently on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics score of 78% fresh with 83% of audiences liking the film,Warm Bodies seemed to have struck a positive chord with most who’ve seen the film. Bringing a new perspective to the completely over saturated zombie film genre, Warm Bodies was able to capitalize on that as well as its PG-13 rating. Should the film hold up half-decently over the next couple of weeks, I’d expect a sequel announcement to be made.
It’s becoming increasing apparent after the performances of Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand two weeks ago and Stallone’s Bullet to the Head this weekend that the geriatric action heroes of old just don’t generate the box office revenues that they used to. A ‘B-’ Cinemascore coupled with Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 46% rotten with 64% of audiences liking the film doesn’t bode well for the film’s chance of turning any kind of profit. The backers of the upcoming The Tomb should have an even bigger concern, since they put out a reported $70 million for the Stallone/Schwarzenegger team up film; all signs are pointing to a massive disappointment.
The last new film of the weekend, having a limited opening playing only 659 theaters, was Stand Up Guys. The Al Pacino and Christopher Walken led film wasn’t a big hit with critics based on the 36% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, however 52% of audiences liked the film. We’ll know more once the film expands its theater count, but it’s not looking good based on early buzz and returns.

The Box Office Prediction Game – Week #5 results
Weekend #5 saw $2 million separate Trevor, myself, Nick and Daniel. Trevor and myself were able to cut into Nick’s lead albeit only slightly. We both currently sit just under $5 million behind. Jason ended the weekend in the middle of the pack both for the weekend and the overall total. Daniel had a much better weekend, but still finds himself in fifth place about $15 million back. Shane took another massive hit and is currently sitting alone in last place almost $30 million back.
Here are the week #5 standings
