If there is one horror franchise that I can’t stand it’s Paranormal Activity. Each new installment is budgeted with no more than $5 million so they can wring any amount of cash from teenagers who think these films are “scary.” That’s my problem with this series, I don’t find the films scary. Setting up a camera and waiting for a door to move, or a person to walk around in their sleep doesn’t frighten me, it becomes the “Where’s Waldo?” equivalent of a horror movie. And now we have the first spin-off in the series that will try to build on the mythology, but take place in Mexico called Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. My interest is on the zero mark.
The plot follows Jesse (newcomer Andrew Jacobs) who comes across a mysterious demon worshiping ritual in a woman’s apartment below his. Soon after, weird things begin to happen to him as if he were being possessed (he’s being possessed) and the connections between this purposely Latino targeted film and the others in the series begin to emerge. Just check out the trailer below:
First off, there isn’t a singe good scare in the trailer. I remember the trailers for the other films and how they genuinely tried to market the film to people who loved the previous installments and want to be scared. This has nothing but mythology building which could be a good thing, or a very bad thing depending on how you like your horror movies. If they can incorporate both the mythology and great horror, then maybe the series could turn around for me, but that’s highly doubtful. I would rather a standard horror movie as opposed to these films.
I also don’t quite understand the Latino targeted audience. It seems more like a tool to connect these new characters with one we’ve seen in the previous films who disappeared. The idea that they want to make this series diverse is a cool idea, but from what I’ve been shown so far, it still doesn’t make much sense. Not to mention the look of the film looks cheaper, but not in the sense that it’s taking place in Mexico, but that it could pass for a straight-to-video title.
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is sent to death with a January 3rd release date. This honestly can’t be good. What you guys think? Do you adore this series? Are you excited for this spin-off? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
