The Oscars vs Emmys in 2019

The Oscars – 91st Academy Awards Highlights

The 2019 Oscars took place on Feb. 4 at Dolby Theatre Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The year of 2019 in film brought a lot of surprises to the audience due to many unexpected winners and jaw-dropping performances.

Perhaps one of the most talked about musical performance of the night was Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s duet of the song “Shallow” in the movie “A Star is Born,” which won an Oscar for best original song of the year – making it Gaga’s first Oscar Award. The chemistry between the co-stars stunned the whole theater as they walked hand-in-hand to the stage and gave a tear-jerking performance.

“Black Panther” marked a turning point in Marvel Studios history, as it became the first ever Marvel superhero movie to win not one but three awards. The thing that made this whole scenario truly iconic was when Ruth Carter won for Best Costume Design, making her the first ever African American woman to do so. Similarly, Hannah Beachler became the first woman of color to not win in the category of Best Production Design, but she was also the only woman of color nominated.

The year 2019 also brought to screens the story of music legend Freddie Mercury of Queen in the documentary of his life, where he was portrayed by actor Rami Malek. This biofilm won 4 Oscars, making it the most awarded act of the night, and Malek was named the first Egyptian American to win Best Actor.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards Highlights

The Emmys happened on Sept. 22 at Microsoft Theatre Downtown, Los Angeles, California. Between the Oscars vs Emmys, the Oscars ceremony was successful without any host; meanwhile, the Emmys’ decision to not get an emcee definitely backfired.

The most unforgettable speech of the night was made by Michelle Williams after winning an Emmy for her performance in the series “Fosse/Verdon.” In her speech, she spoke a very important issue – equal pay for women, especially for women of color in TV and film. Her speech was highly applauded, as it resonated with many people.

However, there was one award winner of the night that made many fans and LGBT advocates squeal with joy. That award winner was Billy Porter who won Best Lead Actor for his role in the drama series “Pose.” This win made Porter the first black and openly gay man to win an Emmy for lead actor.

Another shocking but expected event was when the HBO series “Game of Thrones” broke its 2015 record of most Emmys for a single season. The show took away 12 awards.
