If you are a fan of mermaid movies just like me, here is a watch list of the best mermaid movies that will make your day thanks to waves of laughter and a bit of magic.

5 of the Best Mermaid Movies

Aquamarine, 2006

This lighthearted rom-com film, directed by Elizabeth Allen, stars Sara Paxton, Emma Roberts, and Joana Levesque. It is a must-watch if you love mermaid movies.

The story follows Aquamarine (Paxton), who meets two best friends Claire (Roberts) and Hailey (Levesque) miraculously. They instantly became friends and help Aquamarine to find her true love, who in return will grant them wishes. That true love is none other than a lifeguard, Raymond (Jake McDorman).

This movie was a success among teen girls as soon as it got released and is our pick for No. 1 among the best five mermaid movies.

Splash, 1984

This romantic fantasy-based movie is a favorite among mermaid movie lovers. Directed by Ron Howards, it stars Tom Hanks as Allen Bauer and Daryl Hannah as Madison. The movie is about a successful businessman, Allen, who falls in love with a mysterious woman. She is later found out to be a mermaid.

This film was nominated for an Academy Award for the best original screenplay. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing, Original Screenplay. Hannah also won Saturn Award for Best Actress.

The Little Mermaid, 1989

It is an animated fantasy kids’ movie produced by Disney. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, this movie features our favorite mermaid cartoon character, Ariel.

Ariel loves the human world she observes from below in her ocean home, and she attempts several times to become a human. She one day falls in love with Prince Eric and struggles to win his love so she can be a woman instead of a mermaid.

This movie has won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (“Under the Sea”).

Scales: Mermaids are Real, 2017

A relatively new mermaid movie, Scales needs to be on the list of the best mermaid movies. This movie is directed by Kevan Peterson, and the storyline revolves around a girl named Siren.

On her twelfth birthday, Siren is about to discover the truth about herself that will change her life completely. She is a mermaid, and she can suddenly connect all the strange things happening to her.

This movie won the title for the Best Family Film at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

The Thirteenth Year, 1999

This movie is a comedy directed by Duwayne Dunham. It stars Chez Starbucks as Cody Griffin, who happens to be a Merman. The story revolves around an adopted teenager who started feeling strangely at his thirteen birthday, experiencing the appearance of scales on his body and the need to drink gallons of water in one go. He also manages to find out his birth mother is a mermaid. This movie has been nominated at the Young Artist Awards ceremony for Best Family TV movie.

These are some of my all-time favorite mermaid movies. I hope you will also enjoy them too!
