Everyone loves a Rom Com. The mood is light, the tone comedic and the whole experience at its best offers plenty of light hearted escapism. If only life was like the movies!
So which are the best romantic comedy movies to watch for Valentine’s Day? We take a trawl though the decades to find out.
First up, the 1980s.This was a good decade for romantic comedies but in our opinion there is one that stands held and shoulders above the rest. For one thing it is extremely funny and for another, this is such a feel good movie that you can’t fail to have a good time while watching it.
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Can a straight couple really be just friends? Sally played by Meg Ryan is obsessed by the idea of marriage but Billy Crystal’s grumpy Harry seems far too pessimistic to give romance a go. The sparkling dialogue, witty screenplay and some memorable lines and a satisfying end, makes this movie one of the best and it set the scene for many romcoms of the 90s. “I’ll have what she’s having!”
The nineties saw some of the best romantic comedies to watch for Valentine’s Day. Some of these were produced by Richard Curtis such as Notting Hill, but in our opinion there is only one stand out British rom com winner….
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
Everybody loves this film and seen through today’s eyes its frothy depiction of 90s Britain seems as far away to us now as a Victorian costume drama. The film follows the progress of a group of 30 something friends who now spend their weekends attending the weddings of their friends and finding romance along the way. There is a funeral too as well as a coming out scene and overall this romantic movie is hilarious, sentimental and moving.
If you are planning on watching a romantic movie with your guy, it can be good to get him onside with some sport as with this vintage offering. After all the best romantic comedy movies to watch for Valentine’s Day are those that you can both enjoy.
Fever Pitch (2005)
Ben Wrightman (Jimmy Fallon) is dating Lindsay Meeks (Drew Barrymore) and although the two are very opposite, the relationship is going well. That is until Lindsay realises that Ben’s true love of his life is following the Boston Red Sox with a high level of fanaticism. So will their different ideas on the importance of baseball ruin the relationship? This movie has something for everyone and is a light hearted look at the way men and women both view romance!
Singing, dancing, great choreography, set design and romance, our last offering has it all….
La La Land (2016)
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone turn in dazzling performances in La La Land. The plot depicts two struggling artists in LA who fall in love but find that their relationship is stretched as their careers take them in different directions. Expect some great dance scenes, mesmerising photography and a movie that is so glossy it is practically eye watering.
